Seattle began as port city and the maritime industries are a huge part of the city’s ethos. But as container ships became dominant, port operations moved to the South end of Elliott Bay. Over recent years the north end has been transitioning to recreational uses. Like Gasworks Park on Lake Union, Myrtle Edwards Park had been a polluted industrial site but now the shoreline has been restored, a mile and a half of bike and pedestrian paths have been built and the Seattle Art Museum has constructed an outdoor sculpture garden which is home to many pieces of famous modern art such as the bright orange Alexander Calder sculpture titled “Eagle” . On any pleasant day the paths and beaches fill with Seattleites eager for sunshine, strolling, riding bikes, taking selfies or just hanging out.
