Surprisingly, given the hills and the rainy weather, Seattle was named in a 2016 Zillow study as the most bike friendly city in the US. Perhaps thanks to the efforts of a bike-commuting recent former mayor who rode his bike all over town – even to his official meetings – Seattle’s bike paths have expanded dramatically in the last few years. Although only about 4 percent of Seattle commuters are regular bicyclists, a city study in 2013 found that nearly 30 percent of adult residents — about 158,000 people — ride bikes at least occasionally. But while many don’t feel safe enough on Seattle traffic-clogged streets to ride daily Zillow researchers found that it takes the typical Seattle cyclist 27 minutes to get to work, compared to 32 minutes on transit and 22 minutes driving, plus they are staying more fit.
