As Seattle has grown the needs and directions of the economy have changed and old industrial areas have evolved. The Georgetown area which used to be home to polluting heavy industries has become a mecca for artists and funky cultural experimentation. The Georgetown Trailer Mall opens on weekends so local artisans and purveyors of eclectic found objects can sell their wares from imaginatively decorated funky old trailers. As Todd (who goes by just one name) owner the trailer shop Oh Brother wryly observes you don’t arrive looking for a specific item. “the thing will find you,” he says. Next door at the Georgetown Arts & Cultural Center painter, printmaker, teacher, former artists’ model and entrepreneur Angielena Chamberlain has converted a 1915 vintage hotel and former brothel into a place ascendant artists can create and display their work. Her tenants include painters photographers, musicians and an herbalist/shaman. The neighborhood is also home to several top-rated restaurants, popular bars, leading galleries and the nationally famous Fran’s Chocolates, all in the flight path of nearby Boeing Field, where the first jetliners lifted wheels.
